History of the festival
RESULTS OF THE FESTIVAL COMPETITION 2012

It is July, the seaside resort of Balchik, north of Varna, is blessed with wonderful weather. Balchik hosted the International Children’s English Festival” The World in Children’s Hands”, for the second consecutive year. While there are numerous children’s festivals taking place on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast every year, this is one festival not to miss. Why must you ask? First, the Bulgarian seaside  in Balchik is peaceful and calm. Next, you   have many interesting places to visit.

Two years ago, in 2009, Svetlana Atanasova created the festival to give students a different opportunity. Theatre and dramatic performance in English is a rarity among dance and music festivals. The idea for the festival came from Svetlana’s observations on what students were interested in, but noticed  there was no venue for them to perform to an audience. The festival “the World in Children’s Hands” was created by Atanasova to give students the chance to perform. As this festival grows, it will also allow them to enjoy a beautiful, picturesque town and have a vacation.

The beginning was hard, but exciting and memorable. The first age category in the nomination of Drama Art was represented by children from “Tandem “Lefortovo, Moscow with a group leader Irina Burmistrova and by children from ”Blue Skies” from Balchik. ”Tandem” showed the fairy tale “Snowhite” which impressed with beautiful costumes and nice music. They took the third place. Bulgarian students demonsrated good pronunciation and ability to act in a team and took the second place.

Another group of children from Lefortovo, Moscow, led by Olga Ivanova performed  musical composition ”At the library”. We enjoyed their colourful and lovely performance  and they won the third  place in the second age category. The second prize went to the group of children “Step by step’’ from  Moscow (children’s centre “Culture and Education”) and their teacher Irina Bovina. The children amuzed the audience with traditional English songs  and a funny story.

Among the participants in the third age category ”Jam session” from Moscow school 1229 with a group leader Tatiana Pilyutik  were the best. They performed  “Canterville ghost” by Oscar Wild and were brilliant. The participants from ”Blue Bird” Gjel offered the audience “San Yeller’s Valentine” by Dickens. They were led by  Vera Timofeeva.

We really enjoyed the performances of children from “Step by Step” with a group leader Eleonora Yakovleva from Moscow centre of Aesthetic education. It was a great pleasure to listen to some famous English poems in first, second and third categories. Students from Bulgaria and Russia made the audience feel happy with their songs. They demonstrated  rich voices and vocal skills. The children were taught by Mila Mavrova and  Diana Dorofeeva.

In 2010, the the festival participants expanded and came from more cities and towns and this resulted in more groups winning awards. Besides the group from Balchik, a group of children ”English Language Hunters” from Rakovsky, led by teachers Monica Kosova  and Milena Lesova, took third place in “Dramatic Arts” for their performance called “The Beauty and the Beast”.

In 2010 “Tandem“ from Lefortovo, Moscow  with a group leader Irina Burmistrova performed two plays and received second place in the first age category. The third prize went to “Jam session” from Moscow school 1229. For  first place in “Dramatic Arts”, there were  two schools who  shared  the prize. Margarita Mitkova from Haskovo has children  share their prize with the “Lighthouse”, while Irina Bovina from Moscow had her  students win with “Step by Step”.

In second place, Evelina Topchian (“Journey across countries “school 941 )had  her students win with their musical “Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves”, while Irina Trofimova took  third place with her students performing “Lazy Jack”. Children’s group “Jam session”, school 1229 from Moscow won the most prizes and diplomas. Their leader and teacher Tatiana Pilyutil  was awarded a special diploma for building the best children’s  theatre group. Their spectacle was based on “Alice’s Adventure in wonderland” by Lewis Carroll and became the owner of Grand Prix. In addition, their musical “My Fair Lady’ took first place in the third age category.

It was wonderful to watch the participants in their “Recitation” performances. The audience was treated to a variety of literary works and characters from these works. They created unique  atmosphere and  have utilized  multimedia effectively. The most memorable performance in this category was a monologue of happiness from “Lolita” by Nabokov. This was acted by Anaya Nikol from “Step by Step”, whose teacher were Eleonora Yakovleva and Diana Dorofeeva.

For vocal performances, Bulgarian students  presented the audience with plenty  of really exciting ,strong and beautiful voices, which  demonstrated excellent vocal skills. The Bulgarian  winners  in the nomination”Vocal skills” were Damiana Ilieva, Gabriela Koleva, Darena  Yordanova, Petya Adjopova, Nevena Galinova. The most successful  Russian singers were Yana Dolmazova, David Shamilashvily, Nastya Naumova, Vasilyi Butkevich.

The Russian students were lead under the guidance of the talented singer and teacher Diana Dorofeeva, who amuzed the audience during the gala concert in the Stone Hall, situated in Queen Maria’s palace. In all categories, we should note that nobody was left without a prize. Everyone  got a present and a certificate of participation in the Interntional festival. From beginning to end, the Festival was successful. So many talented and creative children in one place!
